Hotel 540 awarded 5 Green Keys

The 5 Green Keys rating is the highest level awarded to hotels, and Hotel 540 is the only hotel in Kamloops awarded with this rating. Specific areas of achievement include the property's energy and water conservation efficient use, waste management programs, and eco-purchasing.

 

Kamloops Water Treatment Centre

Built between March 2003 and December 2004, the Kamloops Water Treatment Centre became the largest operating facility in North America to use membrane treatment when it opened in February 2005. The state of the art plant not only provides high quality potable water, but also boats several other features. The design itself was very environmentally focused, relying on green technology and using a variety of innovative techniques to minimize impact  on the environment. Lengths were taken to also ensure security of the current water source through watershed protection measures.

The Thompson Rivers Univeristy Water Education and Research Centre is also situated at the plant, providing a venue for water quality research and training. The TRU Water Education and Research Centre is the first centre in North America actually sited at an operation water treatment plant.

 

Thompson-Nicola Regional District Recycling Depot

In 2008 the TNRD started a new Regional Solid Waste Management Plan (found here) which included the development of a regional Pay-as-you-Throw garbage collection program with unlimited blue bag recycling. Operation was continued for 5 landfills and 27 transfer stations. One of 2011's objectives was to achieve a 30% reduction in waste disposal and the TNRD also saw recycling increase by 200 tonnes in 2011 over 2010.  A request for proposals to remove and recycle all of the metal that is collected in TNRD waste management facilities was also released to salvage the valuable commodity.

The Best Western PLUS Kamloops Hotel not only boasts a 4 Green Key rating (2010) but also takes cleaning to the next level with "natural" cleaning of their guest rooms using "Aqeuos Ozone Solution." This allows the hotel to eliminate 95% of the chemicals previously used to clean the guest rooms. 

 

Kamloops CHBA CI Members in First Annual Built Green BC Awards

Built Green BC has announced the finalists for the first annual Built Green BC Awards.  Five of 24 finalists are from Kamloops.  Winners for the Built Green BC Awards were announced at a gala dinner and awards ceremony on September 17, 2010.

 

2010 EQuilibirum House - Green Dream Home

This joint project between Thomspon Rivers University and the Canadian Home Builders Association Central Interior addresses the need for training a new generation of highly skilled home building professionals. For the 14th consecutive year, this group plans to sell the house to the YMCA/YWCA for use as their annual Dream Home lottery fundraiser. Green Dream Home in Kamloops, BC

For the past 3 years, the training houses have met the hight Built Green standards. In 2010, the project raised the bar by building this house as an EQuilibrium and NetZero home.

The Green Dream Home is part of the EQuilibrium Sustainable Housing Demonstration Initiative led by Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation. EQuilibrium strives to balance our housing needs with the needs of our environment by bringing the private and public sectors together with the goal of developing homes and communities that are designed to address occupant health and comfort, energy efficiency and renewable energy production, resource conservation, reduced environmental impact and affordability.

EQuilibrium housing combines a wide-range of technologies, strategies, products, techniques and innovations designed to reduce a home's environmental impact to an absolute minimum. At the same time, EQuilibrium housing also features commercially available, on-site renewable energy systems to provide clean energy to help reduce annual consumption, costs and our carbon footprint.

The two-storey home with a walk-out basement is located in the Sun Rivers Resort Community just five minutes from downtown Kamloops.

Fish for the Future
