B.C. LAUNCHES ENHANCED DRIVER'S LICENCEICBC opens up online system for EDL appointment bookings
Following two years of development and testing, British Columbians can now book appointments to apply for B.C.’s Enhanced Driver’s Licence (EDL) – a driver’s licence that also allows the cardholder to cross the border at land or water points of entry between Canada and the U.S. with a single piece of identification. B.C. is also offering an Enhanced Identification Card (EIC) for persons who do not drive and for young adults 12 years of age and older. Application appointments will begin May 1.
The full implementation of B.C.'s EDL program was announced this morning by the Provincial and Federal Governments at a news conference held at ICBC’s Driver Licensing Centre at Royal Centre Mall in downtown Vancouver. To view the Government's news release please click here.
All Canadian citizens resident in B.C. are eligible to apply for an enhanced card and must successfully complete the application process to confirm identity and Canadian citizenship, which includes an in-person interview at one of 16 EDL-designated Driver Licensing Centres. Starting today, interested customers can book an appointment for their in-person interview online at icbc.com or by calling the EDL Customer Service line at 1-866-972-6888. We anticipate great public response to the program and encourage people to book their appointment online to avoid potential phone delays.
B.C.’s EDL is intended to meet documentation requirements under the United States Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative which requires all travelers, including Canadian and U.S. citizens, to present a passport or other approved document that confirms identity and citizenship when entering the U.S. The EDL will be accepted for entry into the U.S. by land or water, however a passport is still required for air travel. Both the EDL and EIC are voluntary and will be available for an incremental fee of $35. Full details on the program and how to apply have been posted to icbc.com and can be found in Your Guide to B.C.’s Enhanced Driver’s Licence available at all ICBC points of services across the province. |
