MCBROOM SCORES A HOLE-IN-ONE WITH LATEST COURSE, TOBIANO

18-Hole Championship Course Set to Open June 2007 (Kamloops, B.C.) – Renowned Canadian golf architect, Thomas McBroom, has done it again.

Recently awarded Golf Digest Magazine Best New Canadian Course in 2006 for The Ridge at Manitou, three McBroom designed courses have ranked among the Top 10 Canadian courses in SCORE Golf’s Top 100 Canadian Courses. Is Tobiano, McBroom’s latest 18 hole-championship course opening this June, next?

Set high upon bluffs overlooking Kamloops Lake, in the Thompson Okanagan region of British Columbia, Tobiano occupies one of the most spectacular, unpopulated lakeside sites in Western Canada, surrounded by the majestic interior mountains, rolling grasslands, and desert plains. Tobiano’s challenging - yet playable – course includes vistas of 10,000 year-old hoodoos and rugged Columbia and Cascade Mountains framed by expansive views of Kamloops Lake from each of the distinctive 18 holes.

The combination of an almost entirely untouched landscape paired with sun baked hills, fragrant sagebrush and a seemingly-endless lake, make Tobiano a one-of-a-kind, mustplay course. Unlike most golf communities where the course is laid around the homes, at Tobiano the course sits softly on the land, following the natural ebb and flow of the terrain, with the residential and commercial buildings strategically positioned around the course.

The result is a course that runs sequentially and without interruption, with each hole exuding a unique personality and character, creating an exceptional golf experience.

Mike Grenier (Pagebrook Inc.) showed great foresight in simultaneously planning the course at Tobiano and the residential and commercial development,” says course designer McBroom, “Because of this we were able to really take advantage of the land and build the community around the course, instead of the other way around. It makes the course feel really natural, like it is part of the land.”

According to McBroom, Tobiano’s “rugged naturalness” will position the course as a strong contender for next year’s Golf Digest Top 10.

Beautifully hand crafted bunkers are filled with white silica sand from Boston Bar, B.C. After years of preparation under the watchful eyes of McBroom and Grenier, the bent grass course is now seeded, shaped, and at the grow-in stage, set for play in June 2007.
Upon completion, the par 72, 18-hole championship course will stretch 7,328 yards. This unique ranch style course, complete with desert dunes and lush fairways, features fields, ravines, and bluffs paired with breathtaking lake views. The extensive 15 acre on-site practice academy will offer double-ended practice tees, two putting areas, a chipping area with practice bunkers, and a training academy. A large outdoor patio at the Clubhouse overlooking the 29-km long Kamloops Lake as well as a restaurant and lounge make it the perfect spot to relax after a scenic round or as a venue for special events.

“When golfers play this course, I think the raw beauty of the landscape and the quality of the holes will be a real eye opener.” says McBroom, “We designed this course to offer a unique experience for every player, regardless of skill level. I think we achieved a dramatic, very fun and playable course for everyone.”

Located just off the Trans Canada Highway outside of Kamloops, Tobiano is also an easy drive from Whistler via the Duffy Lake Road, the Okanagan and Vancouver via the Coquihalla Highway, making it the perfect addition to a BC golf vacation. Regular flights into the nearby Kamloops Airport connect Tobiano with major centers including Vancouver, Calgary, and Seattle.
Miles Mortensen, previously of Fairmont Hotels & Resorts, has joined the Tobiano team as the Director of Golf after working as the Head Golf Pro at both the Fairmont Chateau Whistler Golf Club and the Fairmont Banff Springs Golf Course. Miles’ leadership and passion for creating unforgettable experiences made him the ideal choice for Tobiano.

Located at Tobiano, a master planned 1,000 acre luxury resort community just minutes from Kamloops, the golf course is an integral part of the development, and will be complemented by a 100-slip marina, an equestrian centre, three hotel sites, and over 1,000 planned homes.
“The response to the lifestyle offered by Tobiano has been tremendous,” says Dana Volrich, head of Sotheby’s International Realty’s sales and marketing team for Tobiano, “Golfing is a huge draw to this area and with the course at Tobiano opening in June; we’re already seeing a lot of interest in the upcoming real estate opportunities.”
