The new year means a time to set new goals, make future plans, and try new things. Here are seven unique things to do for exploring Kamloops and feeding your curiosity in 2019.
Night Ski on a Full Moon at Harper Mountain
There is nothing quite like skiing with the glow of a full moon. Harper Mountain has night skiing Thursday through Saturday from 5 pm to 9 pm and is the perfect way to spend a night under the stars. Après in the rustic lodge with a cold beer or hot mulled wine beside the wood-burning fireplace. The next full moon in Kamloops is January 20th 2019, but full moons come around once a month, so you’ll have plenty of chances to give this a go before ski season is over.
Taste a Craft Beer from Every Brewery
Kamloops is quickly becoming a craft beer destination in BC. With four breweries open and one more on the way, locals and visitors can grab a brew, a bite, and a chat with like-minded people. Round up your friends and beer crawl through town, sampling a pale ale (or draft of your choice) from Red Collar, Iron Road, The Noble Pig, and Kamloops' newest brewery Alchemy. Remember to drink responsibly and always have a designated driver.
Ride the Kamloops Bike Ranch (Maybe for the First Time)
If you’re a seasoned mountain biker, or it’s your first time, the Kamloops Bike Ranch is the place to test your skills or conquer your fears. This 26-acre park, largest municipal bike park in Canada, offers gullied trails lined with pine trees and singletrack surrounded by grasslands. If you don’t want to pedal up, locally owned Mostly Mental Shuttles offers trips to the top of the park.
Take in the View from Isobel Lake
The 3.2 kilometre (2.2 mile) trail around Isobel Lake is the perfect wilderness walk for the whole family. Open year-round, you can snowshoe or hike this loop, and stop for a picnic in the covered areas, cook over the fire pit, or fish for rainbow trout from the wharfs around the lake.
Tour the Thompson Valley Wine Region
The four wineries that make up the Thompson Valley Wine region are unique and a great way to experience the surrounding landscape of the North and South Thompson Rivers. Stop in at Harper’s Trail, Monte Creek Ranch, Privato, and Sagewood for a glass of bright, locally made wine. Sit back, relax and let one of the local tour operators take you on a journey.
Treat Yourself at the Aina Organic Spa
The new year is also a good time for self-care. Treat yourself at the Aina Organic Spa with a massage, facial, or reflexology treatment. The detox package is a great option to help your mind and body feel lighter, more energized, and refreshed. The perfect chance to revitalize the body for a new year.
Learn to Ice Fish on a Frozen Lake
Whether you’re new to fishing or are an experienced angler, ice fishing is a great winter activity to get outdoors, connect with friends and family, and enjoy the lakes surrounding Kamloops. Elevated Fishing Adventures in Sun Peaks offers guided ice fishing tours to learn from an expert angler or you can head to the Visitor Centre in Kamloops to use their free ice-fishing equipment and go on your own fishing adventure at Tunkwa, Heffley Lake, Edith lake, or Walloper Lake.
