The people of the confluence
Kamloops is located on the ancestral territory of the Tk‘emlúpsemc or “people of the confluence,” where the North and South Thompson rivers connect. Our city name is an English interpretation of the Secwepemc word, T’kemlups, meaning “where the rivers meet.” The Tk’emlúps te Secwépemc, as they are now known, have been deeply connected to these lands and waters for thousands of years. Honour their story and take part in authentic experiences, like a tour of the former Kamloops Indian Residential School or the colourful Kamloopa Powwow.
Sprinkled with eclectic street art, Kamloops is home to a thriving and inclusive arts and culture scene. The city boasts several galleries, museums, and performance spaces that showcase the best of local and regional talent. From live music and theatre to visual arts and festivals, there is always something happening in Kamloops—and everyone is welcome. Be sure to check out our Pride events and cultural celebrations throughout the year.
The blossoming food scene in Kamloops might come unexpected to some, but those in the know are hardly surprised. Our location in the heart of BC’s Interior and proximity to family-run farms, means ingredients are high-quality, fresh, and local. Kamloops eateries and restaurants serve up flavour-driven cuisine that spans the globe—and pays tribute to our homegrown roots, too.
