Dear Universe traces a line through two decades of practice by the multidimensional artist Maura Doyle. Tethering together the exhibition’s works of sculpture, drawing, printed matter, video, and experimental writing, is Doyle’s attention to the inelegant, the easily overlooked, and the poetic possibilities lodged in day-to-day life.

By bringing focus to the undervalued, inflating the personal to the celestial, and monumentalizing the irregular, Doyle questions how we justify what is important to ourselves and others. She scrutinizes late capitalism’s patriarchal bombast, yet at the same time proposes an earnest meditation on the brevity of human existence within the immensity of cosmic time. In so doing, Doyle validates the asking of big questions alongside trivial ones, acknowledging that both are part of what makes us human.

In this new body of work, Raluchukwu Ojah explores questions of cross-cultural exchange and the immigrant experience through fashion and dance. Ojah’s research draws upon a traditional spiritual masquerade called Ekpe, performed in his hometown of Amaekpu, Ohafia, Nigeria. Through a series of life-size dancing figures hanging from the wall, Ojah reimagines the Ekpe masquerade to reflect upon his own roots and the ways in which ancestral rituals are expressed through contemporary Nigerian and Western fashion. Ojah’s figures capture the dynamic movement of traditional Igbo, Enugu, and Ohafia dances, which have had a strong influence on contemporary dance, including hip-hop and club dance culture.

This body of work considers the ways in which the global exchange of people and cultural material influence contemporary fashion and art. At the same time, Ojah’s work tells a personal story about his cultural heritage and his own immigrant experience.
