Dear Universe traces a line through two decades of practice by the multidimensional artist Maura Doyle. Tethering together the exhibition’s works of sculpture, drawing, printed matter, video, and experimental writing, is Doyle’s attention to the inelegant, the easily overlooked, and the poetic possibilities lodged in day-to-day life.

By bringing focus to the undervalued, inflating the personal to the celestial, and monumentalizing the irregular, Doyle questions how we justify what is important to ourselves and others. She scrutinizes late capitalism’s patriarchal bombast, yet at the same time proposes an earnest meditation on the brevity of human existence within the immensity of cosmic time. In so doing, Doyle validates the asking of big questions alongside trivial ones, acknowledging that both are part of what makes us human.

In her new body of work, Slug Eggs, Bree Apperley explores the impact of technology on our society, feminine expression in a capitalist system, and what she sees as the compromised nature of modern life. Through a playful display of repurposed objects and photographs, the ubiquitous white gallery plinth and typical framing devices are disrupted and reimagined.

Apperley’s multimedia installation draws on strategies taken up by Arte Povera, the 1960s Italian art movement that saw art as a revolutionary tool against the increasing monetization of art, rampant industrialization, and consumerism. Apperley connects the context of this movement to the increasingly consumer driven space of the internet today, with its proliferation of AI generated imagery and the exploitative practices of capitalism that corrupt the communal potential and original dream of virtual space. Her work points to the changing nature of cyberspace since its inception, shifting from a platform that nurtured shared interests and connection to one that thrives on the increasing isolation and disenfranchisement of its users. Increasingly, the priority is on paid views, Artificial Intelligence, advertisements, and websites primarily peddling products and services.

Bringing together eclectic materials that offer uncanny moments of discovery, Slug Eggs shifts us away from the disconnection inherent in digital interfaces and prompts human and material connection.

Rajni Perera (b. 1985) came to Canada with her family in childhood from Sri Lanka, and in the years since has established herself as one of Canada’s leading contemporary artists. Her paintings and sculptures draw on such diverse traditions as historical Sri Lankan art, Indian miniature painting, medieval armour, South Asian textiles, and science fiction illustrations. Gathering inspiration from across place and time, Perera looks ahead to an uncertain future threatened by climate change and looming social inequities.  

Perera’s works are populated by Travellers, visitors from the future who preside over dystopic realms, flooded and in flames, often mutated to adapt to their challenging environments. Far from grotesque, their physical mutations—extra eyes or limbs, hairless bodies, technicoloured and roughly textured skin—embody potent forms of biological resistance against the atrocities humankind continues to wage against our world.
