Ins Choi is best known as the creator of Kim’s Convenience, the play that became a beloved Canadian television series. In his newest work Choi shares tales of growing up as a “PK” (Preacher’s Kid), his family’s exodus from Korea, and the long line of preachers and preachers' sons he is descended from. In a family deeply rooted in tradition, with his future seemingly pre-ordained, Choi wrestled with family expectations and his own ambition as an artist. He tells his story with wry humour, curiosity, love, and with the support of three musicians who play his original funny songs live on stage, and who occasionally enter the narrative. The piece feels to me like part theatre and part memoir, with the vibe of a summer camp worship service led by really cool young pastors.
