A RECLAIMED HISTORY, OUT OF TIME

In the year eighteen-something-something, three women–Métis, Ojibwe, and European Settler, respectively–sit in a trading fort on the shores of a “Reddish River” sipping tea. They contemplate love, politics, power, and their roles in history while “hot nerds” like Louis Riel get all the glory. This sharp-witted satire shifts the focus to the women in the room. The fact that they are name-dropping The Killers and Breakfast at Tiffany’s tips us off that this isn’t your garden variety history lesson.

Anishinaabe and Slovene playwright Frances Koncan’s wildly entertaining take on her subject matter has made this one of the most produced plays in Canada since it rocketed from the Toronto Fringe to the Stratford Festival.
