The heart of any great city is its people, the ones who create memorable experiences, welcome visitors with genuine warmth, and build a sense of community one interaction at a time. In Kamloops, Bao Chau (Joey) Tang is one of those people.
As the Front Office Manager at the DoubleTree by Hilton Kamloops, Joey has dedicated over three years to the hotel industry, bringing a fresh perspective and unwavering commitment to hospitality. What started as an educational pursuit has blossomed into a career fueled by connection, growth, and a deep appreciation for the people who make this work meaningful.
Joey came to Kamloops almost eight years ago to attend Thompson Rivers University for her bachelor's degree in Hospitality Management. Like many who arrive as students, she fell in love with this peaceful town and decided to stay - a choice that has shaped both her career and her life in Kamloops.
We're excited to spotlight a Kamloops champion like Joey!
TK: Joey — how did you first get into the tourism industry?
"I majored in Hospitality Management and have always been interested in hotel and resort management. Ever since, that's all I have been focused on and manifesting!"
Joey's journey into hospitality wasn't by accident, it was intentional from the start. Her academic foundation at TRU gave her the knowledge, but it's her dedication and focus that have turned education into real-world impact. For over three years now, she's been honing her craft in hotel management, and her commitment to continuous growth is evident in everything she does.
TK: That's wonderful! You're clearly passionate about what you do. What fuels you? What drives your passion for the work you do?
"I am all about the people and the connection," Joey shared. "I am very lucky to work with amazing people at this hotel that turn this job into something that I can enjoy, not a duty. I think that's very crucial!"
This philosophy, that work should be enjoyable, not just obligatory, speaks to Joey's approach to leadership and hospitality. At the DoubleTree by Hilton Kamloops, she's not just managing operations; she's cultivating an environment where her team thrives and where guests feel genuinely welcomed. It's this focus on people and connection that transforms a hotel stay from a simple transaction into a memorable experience.
Joey's goals reflect her commitment to growth and impact. She aims to continue developing as a hospitality professional, making a positive difference in both guest experiences and team development. It's the kind of forward-thinking mindset that strengthens Kamloops' reputation as a welcoming destination.
TK: We love that! On your day off, what's your favourite thing to do in Kamloops?
"I am a foodie, so I'd say exploring restaurants and cafes in Kamloops; the Farmer's market is my favorite place to be on weekends and I'm so excited for the first ever Christmas Market here in Kamloops as well."
Joey's love for Kamloops' food scene shows another side of her connection to this community. Whether she's discovering a new café, browsing the Kamloops Farmers' Market, or anticipating the city's first Christmas Market, she's engaged with the local culture in authentic ways. It's the kind of enthusiasm that makes Kamloops feel like home, not just a place to work, but a place to truly live and explore.
TK: That sounds perfect! Last question: what makes Kamloops stand out for you?
"People in Kamloops are so much friendlier. Almost everywhere you go, you are treated more welcomingly and less systematic, robot-like. In addition, I feel like I can take my time and not rushing all the time since it's less hustle-bustle here in Kamloops."
Joey's perspective captures something essential about Kamloops, it's a place where genuine human connection still matters, where people take the time to be present, and where the pace allows for meaningful interactions. Coming from someone who works in hospitality, this observation carries weight. She experiences firsthand how Kamloops' friendly spirit and unhurried rhythm create a more authentic, welcoming environment for both residents and visitors.
After nearly eight years in Kamloops, Joey has become an integral part of the city's hospitality landscape. Her dedication to learning, her focus on people and connection, and her commitment to creating positive experiences make her exactly the kind of champion this community is proud to celebrate.
For those looking to experience Joey's impact firsthand, a stay at the DoubleTree by Hilton Kamloops offers more than just comfortable accommodations. It's an opportunity to experience the warmth, professionalism, and genuine care that Joey and her team bring to every guest interaction, the kind of hospitality that makes Kamloops stand out as a truly welcoming destination.
