Freeride Lives Here

Kamloops, British Columbia. A town steeped in mountain bike lore, and revered by avid riders across the globe as the birthplace of freeride mountain biking.

From iconic trail builds to groundbreaking film parts, Kamloops has served as a proving ground for freeride pioneers and all who follow in their tire tracks. Home to many of the sport’s most progressive athletes, content creators, trail builders, and entrepreneurs, freeride culture in Kamloops has evolved over the years to encompass much more than the steeps, drops and jump lines of its origins.

Here, we define freeride as a mindset as much as a riding style. It’s how we explore the landscape and connect with our environment. It influences the way we see terrain, and how we build paths to progression for all levels of riders. It serves as a backbone for friendships, familial bonds, and a thriving community driven by a shared passion.

For some, that passion lies in the discovery of iconic lines to push themselves on the steeps and in the air. For others, it's a way to stretch their legs and lungs on heart pounding climbs, and then open it up, fully pinned on the berms and rollers of a high speed descent. Some thrive on laughs and high fives on the tailgate after an epic day of shuttling. While others find their dreams fulfilled chasing toddlers on run bikes through pump tracks and skills parks.

Tourism Kamloops Freeride Fund

'Cuz Freeride Ain't Free

At Tourism Kamloops we hold a great deal of gratitude for the bike community that works tirelessly behind the scenes, often unrecognized and under-resourced, to maintain the mountain bike infrastructure that keeps the birthplace of freeride on the forefront of progression in the sport.

That's why we're pleased to announce the Tourism Kamloops Freeride Fund initiative.

Starting with a $50,000 seed donation from Tourism Kamloops, and supported by donations from local businesses and visiting riders, the Freeride Fund is our way of giving back to the trails.

The Bike Ranch

Home of Freeride Progression

Globally renowned as a premier freeride training facility, North America's largest municipal bike park is an ode to mountain bike progression and THE spot to dial in your skills before exploring the rest of Kamloops' vast trail networks. Accessed by vehicle shuttle or a dedicated climbing trail, "The Ranch" is a 26-hectacre home to 12 downhill trails packed full of berms, jumps and drops, and ranging in difficulty from beginner to pro. At the bottom you'll also find a series of progressive dirt jump lines in the floodlight-lit Jump Corral, where it's not uncommon to rub shoulders with world-class athletes as well as up-and-coming local rippers.

The addition of the All Wheels Pump Track Facility in 2024, featuring paved beginner, intermediate and competiton-level pump tracks, rounds this out as a great place to bring the whole family.

Shuttle Your Way to Paradise

Located a short 20 minute drive outside of town, Harper is the hearbeat of the Kamloops downhill scene. Here, trails ranging from mellow flowing singletrack to full-on DH jump lines, descend 500 meters from the shuttle drop point towards scenic Paul Lake below. The easy shuttle access paired with the breadth of trail difficulties make this a favorite for families and mixed-ability groups. The easier greens and blues offer a variety of opportunities for speed and progression, while the advanced trails navigate plenty of the steep and loose terrain that Kamloops is famous for.

Expect to find ribbons of tacky dirt winding through forests and meadows, with lots of potential for railing berms and getting the wheels off the ground. The surrounding ponderosa pines keep the area cooler and greener, providing a totally different experience from the arid ridges and desert sage-flats in town.

Sun Peaks Bike Park

Iconic DH meets Newschool Flow

A favourite on the BC bike park circuit, Sun Peaks features 83km of lift-accessed, machine-made goodness with great dirt and exquisite technical design, just 45 minutes from town.

Inspired by the freeride scene in Kamloops, Sun Peaks has long been known for steep, raw singletrack and big hits. While you'll still find plenty of opportunities to get rowdy, with iconic tech lines like Insanity One, Gnar-Boom and Smitty’s Steeps, the park has made major investments in newschool flow and jump lines built for progression, with trails and features for every rider, from first timers to pros.

Trails for Freeriders-in-Training

Head out on the Kamloops bike trails and you’ll find a host of little rippers with their parents in tow. There are a number of family-friendly trail areas, including KBRA Progression Zone at Dufferin Park and Lac du Bois area, or “Batch” as the locals call it. The KBRA kids league introduces kids aged 7-13 to the joys of biking and helps them progress along the way. Let’s face it: after a certain point, the kiddos can beat us down just about anything.
