The Kamloops Bike Ranch is the largest municipal bike park in Canada with 12 trails for all levels of mountain bikers. Managed and maintained by the Kamloops Performing Cycling Centre, The Ranch is Kamloops' iconic area for riders to improve their downhill skills. With an elevation change of 132m in 1.1km, a shuttle is ideal for riders who want to avoid the steep climb up the xc trail or Highland Road.

Meet Dylan Methot, a Kamloops local, started Mostly Mental Shuttles in 2010 to provide mountain bikers shuttle service for The Ranch. We caught up with Dylan about his operations, biking in Kamloops, and après riding.

When did you start mountain biking?

My first Kamloops bike experience was back in the early 2000's. My buddy Brad convinced me that mountain biking was the best thing since Betty White; we spent days riding Kenna Cartwright Park on old rigid bikes.

The second experience was after I moved back to Kamloops in 2002 where I picked up a used Norco Wolverine with suspension. My friend Craig took me to the top of Harper Mountain and I proceeded to crash my way down the trails - I was hooked.

What inspired you to start a shuttle service?

I wanted to find a way to make money while riding my bike and immerse myself deeper into the mountain bike culture, which is why I started the shuttle service. Bikes have always been a source of deep enjoyment for me and a staple in my diet; even with a large gap between my biking years. The idea really came about from watching kids bum rides to the top of the Bike Ranch.

What are your favourite trails?

My favourite trails change their minds a lot, from Pale Rider at the Ranch, to Unicorn at Harper, or A Blaze on the Hillside at Pineview. My decision depends on wherever the dirt is especially zesty, where my friends are gathered, where my bike is inspired, and where I'm only thinking about the corners to come.

What's unique about Kamloops riding?

I think what makes riding unique in Kamloops is as long as you’re brave, you can let go of the brakes and just ride. Trust your bike, your tires, the builders, and your ability. It’s a unique freeing feeling. Maybe that’s part of why we are the Freeride mecca of the world.

Do you have tips for new riders?

Tips for noobs? Everybody was one. Everybody. The only way to get better is to ride and ask questions. I really mean that.
